Concert Review: Pixies

The Pixies Doolittle tour is easily the best tour of the year. Pixies fans young and old will easily rank this in their top five concerts of the year and possibly of all time. The newly reunited band plays a set consisting of their beloved album Doolittle in order from start to finish. Also included in the set are a handful of B-sides from the record and a few tracks not on Doolittle.
The band took the stage at about 9 p.m. As they took their places, Kim Deal leaned into her microphone and shouted “B-Sides!” and the band launched into four B-Sides to kick off the show. Immediately after the B-Sides, the screen behind the band went all blue and read “DOOLITTLE.” The band started playing Doolittle, the first track of the record Debaser blasted through the Palladium and the whole audience started singing along. The band blazed through the album, song after song with little in between other than Kim shouting out to the audience occasionally. The visuals on the screen behind the band seemed specially planned out for each song of the album.
They finished off the show with two encores, one consisting of two more Doolittle B-Sides including the alternate version of “Wave of Mutilation” and a second encore of songs not included on Doolittle.
There was little to no communication between band members on stage. Kim Deal and Black Francis were separated by the drum kit the whole show. It's hard to tell if there are still tensions between the Pixies like there used to be, but they don't seem to be communicating like most bands do. That said, it didn't feel like they were going through the motions of playing just for the money. They seem to genuinely want to play the music and they also seemed to enjoy the fan interaction quite a bit. At the end of Doolittle, the band stood in the middle of the stage and all took a bow together.
With an album like Doolittle the fans know every word to every song which helps make for a better concert environment. It was a departure from the usual LA concert crowd of people who are there because they got on the list through a friend of a friend of the guitar tech's roommate.
This isn't a very long tour, and it's not making too many stops so see it while you can because you never know if the Pixies will get back together again. The show easily ranks in the top five concerts of the year along with Prince and Flaming Lips.
