Dangerbird Records is proud to welcome Vancouver’s Hot Hot Heat to their expanding family. “Hot Hot Heat arrived on our doorstep with the best album of their career,” reveals Jeff Castelaz, co-founder/CEO of Dangerbird Records. “When we heard the new record, we wanted them to be part of our gang. When we talked to them, and heard the determination and clarity of purpose in their voices, we had to have them.” The Silver Lake-based label will release the band’s fourth full-length, Future Breeds, this summer.

For frontman Steve Bays and his Hot Hot Heat bandmates, they knew they had found their new home immediately after their first meeting with the label. “Dangerbird got our vibe right away,” explains Bays. “Because of the kind of record we were making, we realized early on that we needed to finish the entire record before looking for a home for it, if they 'got it,' then we could talk. Also, they’re also just really cool people and that's huge to us because, at the end of the day, they are essentially inviting us to join their family. We are pretty thrilled.”

Hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, Hot Hot Heat first came to prominence in 2002 with their breakthrough debut LP, Make Up The Breakdown, an electrifying dose of urgent, dancey rock anchored by frontman Steve Bays’ characteristic yelp and highly infectious melodies. Over the years, the Canadian band has delivered their kinetic brand of rock and roll live to thousands, toured the world with bands such as Modest Mouse, Kings Of Leon, The Walkmen and Queens of the Stone Age, and released several albums, garnering praise from everyone from Pitchfork toRolling Stone and Spin who described their sound as “aggressively exuberant funk-punk.”

The band’s latest album Future Breeds is a call to action. After leaving their previous label, the foursome stripped away all the unnecessary elements in their lives, built their own studio in Vancouver, and emerged renewed and recharged. The resulting record is at once propulsive and volcanic, and fueled, as ever, by candy-coated melodies that hurl you through Bays' lyrical world.

Around 10:30 the Roxy stage curtain rose and revealed a fully built out stage with a drum kit on the right and turntables on the left.  The set started with a bang and never relented.  Travis Barker beat away on the drums non-stop for the whole hour long set, and A-Trak scratched as furiously and skillfully as Mix Master Mike.  The set built around the stage added a handful of lights not usually present at the Roxy.  The light show perfectly complimented the music, and created one of the best atmospheres I’ve ever felt in that club.

The highlight of the set came when the duo launched into a remix of Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Heads Will Roll.”  After that amazing remix ended, it led straight into The Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up,” and then capped off with Daft Punk’s “Robot Rock.”  A-Trak started the song off with the famous drum fill intro and Travis countered back with the drum fill on his actual drum kit.  The “Robot Rock” Drum vs. Vinyl battle raged on for about 30 seconds before the track finally dropped and the crowd went wild. 

The set included guest appearances from Lil Jon, Kid Sister, and Kid Cudi.  The all-star cast of guest performers helped make Travis and A-Trak’s debut of their new act a really special event.

The thing that was very apparent during the show was that A-Trak and Travis are not trying to emulate what Travis did with DJ-AM.  Instead they are trying to create something both similar and completely different at the same time.  While DJ-AM was a dance/electro DJ, A-Trak has his roots firmly planted in hip hop, and it comes across with both the song choice and the style of DJing.  The important thing to keep in mind when attending a Travis x A-Trak show is to expect a completely different show than Travis played with DJ-AM.  It’s different, but just as good in every aspect. 

This is not a show to be missed.  As soon as the duo announces a more dates, you would do yourself good to get tickets as soon as possible.Head

Sleepy Sun is a California band from many Californias. They hail from the rolling oak and sage hills of Sierra Gold Country, The San Francisco Peninsula, where Kesey raged and the Dead were once Warlocks, and the forever-sunshine climes of the Southland.  They came together—young and garage strutting in the coastal Northern California crucible of Santa Cruz. And there they birthed the Sleepy sound—dead blues shaken alive, razor sharp and ramblin’, soul, sonic science and dead-on pop surgery. Wooden, earthy, stratospheric, and swinging…California music of beautiful contrasts for conflicted times.

Now, two records into a frighteningly fast-blossoming evolution, Sleepy Sun are a living machine of fire and focus. Their first release on ATP records Embrace illuminated the golden path to Sleepy land—hard-riffing, delicate, dreamy and cultivated. The latest ATP release, Fever, is arrival at the palace the path promised.

Fever is the honey harmonies and danger wailing of Bret Constantino and Rachel Williams pulled from a tender tangle into steel-strong braid; the wing-on-wing guitars of Matt Holliman and Even Reiss in screaming dives and sweet ascending circles; the lowdown served up tough and thundering from drum and bass authorities Brian Tice and Jack Allen.

Fever is a band working, like the heroic combos of old—real, made by hand, eyes ahead on an unbridled future and giving two shits for the sideways glance of the lurking trend spotter.

Danielle is a different kind of artist for us to present to you.  While she might not be for everyone, fans of pop music will definitely enjoy her new record that dropped last week.  Even though her MySpace doesn't list any influences, her top friends include Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Fiona Apple who are both Rock N Roll Super Show favorites.  She hails from Pennsylvania home of Heinz Ketchup, Clark Bars, Andy Warhol, and Paddy's Pub.

Camp Bisco 9 will once again be held at the picturesque Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, New York.  The expanded setup will include: a second stage in the main field, an improved location for the DJ and late night dance tent - complete with a surround sound system, a local artists and performance art stage.  Indian Lookout Country Club is located approximately 20 minutes travel time from Albany, New York, and sits on 200 acres of rolling, grass fields. The grounds come equipped with full bathrooms; which include flush toilets and showers, as well as 24/7 bathroom attendants. Festival goers will have access to a full bar on site and a general store, which sells almost every necessity for a comfortable and care free experience.

New Zealand’s Kerretta make their US debut this March when the band kicks off their first ever US tour with a show at this year’s SXSW.  To coincide with the SXSW performance and US tour, the band will be releasing their debut album –

Drawing from influences that seem to range from bass heavy hard-hitting crisp clean drum patterns to Bailterspace style bass hooks, Kerretta released their debut 7″ “Death In The Future” in 2007, and have since shared stages with the likes of Explosions In The Sky, The Breeders, Mono and ..And You Will Know Us by the Trail Of Dead.  

In 2008, the band released the Antient EP on 12″ vinyl and finally, scattered with catchy hooks throughout, 2009 was the year their longplayer Vilayer was released and touted by reviewers in making Kerretta stand well apart from the paint by numbers delay pedal abuse bands of the past. 

Keretta is making their LA debut at the best all ages venue in town, The Smell.  Make sure you get out there on March 25 and check these guys out.

Maryland’s All Time Low is currently finishing up a sold out Australian tour. The band’s two latest Hopeless Records releases, Nothing Personal and MTV Unplugged have been comfortably perched on Billboard’s top indie charts since their release. Their original song “Painting Flowers” also appears on Almost Alice, the soundtrack to the upcoming Tim Burton film, Alice In Wonderland.

Personally, I'm more excited for this lineup than I am for the West Coast Bamboozle Lineup.  There's a lot of good stuff packed into one day on this tour.  It's probably a sign that Warped Tour needs to watch it's back because Bamboozle seems like they're on the up.
