Album Review: Noah and the Whale

This album is easily one of the “must listen to” albums of the year. The First Days Of Spring was released on October 6th.  It's the most honest and genuine record that I've listened to all year.  Charlie Fink, vocalist, hid no secrets while writing it.  He bears every emotion he has ever felt when he sings and it will hit you straight in the heart.  Who knew that a band can make such depressing  music sound so gorgeous?  While listening to it, it traps you in a love story of a broken heart and it forces you to listen to the whole record to know the the outcome.

Highlights of the album include “I Have Nothing” and “Stranger”.  Both songs are very dark and have a delicate sound.”Stranger” is one of the most brutally honest songs out there.  It has a message that I'm sure everyone has felt some point in their life and it definitely strikes a nerve.  What sticks out most is the fiddle playing by Tom Hobden.  It flows so naturally through most of the songs, giving the music an angelic touch.  The song “Love of an Orchestra” is the most out of place song on this album.  It's very cheerful and upbeat. It's pretty much the wake up song for listeners since the rest of the album is so mellow.  Although out of place, it's easily one of the best songs on this album.  “Blue Skies” is another favorite.  It starts off with sad lyrics but its ends with a motivational message.

Noah and the Whale's second album is a complete success.  In addition, they have made a movie to go along with the album.  It was written and directed by Charlie Fink.  It can be found in the deluxe version of the album.  Be sure to catch Noah and the Whale on tour.  They truly will not disappoint. Also, check out the Noah and the Whale interview on the site.  They talk about the album and movie in depth.

Noah and the Whale "First Days of Spring" Trailer

British Folk music masters, Noah and the Whale, have just released "The First Days of Spring" which is both an album and a movie.  It's kind of like Sufjan Stevens' "The BQE" except the film and album were conceived together as opposed to one being made to accompany the other.  Above is the extended trailer for the film which also includes one of the songs off of the record.  Check back for our reviews of both the album and the film, as well as our interview with Noah and the Whale at the LA premiere of the film.
